In the novel "En Herrgårdssägen" (A Tale of a Manson) by Selma Lagerlöf there is a bat in disguise, Mrs Sorrow. She is the landlady who demands misery as collateral from her tenants. Mrs Sorrow has a dual nature, we both cling to her and want to escape her. She has the power to imprison and freeze us, but when we meet her face to face, we are fundamentally transformed.
Welcome home to Mrs Sorrow - to the intermediate state - where we struggle and rattle our weapons, strain and break, until we finally let go and fall straight into the dark night. There we are rocked by the winds and waves in the hibernation, in the dawn of the twilight, like the butterfly in the chrysalis and the frog in its seed, which in time will burst open and be reborn, thinned and marvelled at, to see the world in a shimmering new light.
